Medical Facilities
Karuna Cottage is not a medical facility. There is no medical staff or personal assistance provided for residents. It is, therefore, necessary for guests to be capable of self-care or to be accompanied by a carer/helper. This requirement also applies to a person who is confused or disoriented.
A telephone can be provided at Karuna Cottage for special request, only some mobiles get reception on the property.
There are doctors, a chemist, a medical clinic and an ambulance service available in Nelly Bay:
- Magnetic Island Medical Center, telephone 07 4778 5107, 68 Sooning Street, Nelly Bay. Hours 8.30am to 4pm Monday to Thursday, Fridays until 6pm, Saturdays until 12pm. There are two doctors who cover these hours.
- Magnetic Island Pharmacy, telephone 07 4778 5375, 3/55 Sooning Street, Nelly Bay. Open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm Saturday.
- Ambulance service on the island runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is one paramedic on duty at any given time, except at changeover on Thursdays. They have to complete one call for help before they are able to go to the next.
There is helicopter transport to hospital, but if that is not available there is the ferry, with paramedics coming over from Townsville to take patients across. They work with the local doctors also.
